THEATRE Smiley BRANDING MOTION GRAPHICS Image manipulation Smiley is a play written by Guillem Clua, a Spanish playwright, screenwriter, stage director and journalist. The piece premiered in 2012 in Barcelona and has since been performed in over 20 countries, even inspiring a Netflix adaptation. This romantic comedy focuses on the story of Álex, a gym enthusiast working at a bar, and Bruno, an orderly architect with a passion for cinema and literature. Both share a common desire for a relationship that goes beyond a one-night stand. One day, through a twist of fate, they meet, and what starts as a casual date changes their lives forever. Through its humor, the play aims to reflect the ups and downs of a relationship, raising the question: Is love possible between two such different people? For this project, my task was to design the play’s identity, digital content for social media and printed materials such as banners, flyers and posters. The key concepts that guided the design process were: → Emotions → Love → Opposites → Comedy → Bar Design Concept Complementary Opposites In Smiley, the bar is the main setting for encounters, missed connections and reconciliations. To capture its mood, I blended light and shadow in the designs, crafting an atmosphere that is both intriguing and romantic. Guillem Clua suggests that a smiley can convey a wide range of emotions; therefore, various emojis were incorporated to reflect the feelings portrayed in the play. As the protagonists frequently use apps like WhatsApp or Grindr, chat bubbles, an iconic feature of these platforms, were also included. AfterBefore The story centers on a love affair between two characters who are complete opposites. This duality is reflected through a color palette of complementary contrasts: yellow conveys vitality and joy, while violet evokes reflection and mystery. The choice of a geometric sans-serif typeface adds a friendly and warm touch to the design, complementing the overall atmosphere of the play.
